Time to change course
Daily Press (Hampton Roads, VA)
More than 12 million Americans are out of work; another 8.6 million struggle on part-time jobs because they cannot find full time employment. And the number of Americans surviving on food stamps recently hit a record 46 million.
Mr. Obama unleashed an unprecedented expansion of government intrusion into our lives, including medical care. Our massive budget deficits have pushed America's debt to an all-time high of nearly $16 trillion, much of it financed by foreign investors.
While Mr. Obama may not be to blame for economic conditions that caused gasoline prices to double, his response made things worse. His administration made it harder to access America's energy resources while doling out hundreds of millions in tax dollars to unproven green energy companies such as Solyndra, which received more than half a billion in federal incentives before going out of business.
Our children will inherit the staggering costs of supporting an aging population, with fewer good jobs to pay for it. The American dream of leaving our children a better future than we inherited is in serious jeopardy.
Mr. Obama's apologetic view of America's role in the world as its sole superpower also left the world, and our nation, less safe.
Mr. Obama's response to these failures is to ask for more time. He doesn't deserve it.
This presidential election offers Americans a chance to decide what country we want: whether to continue as the nation that encouraged individual initiative to become the richest and freest place on earth, or become just another debt-ridden welfare state whose citizens depend on government handouts.
That is why the Daily Press endorses Mitt Romney for president.
Mitt Romney understands free enterprise and business, and is best suited to create that predictable framework.
Mr. Romney is an intelligent, deliberate man who built upon a successful business career with a productive stint as governor of Massachusetts. While in office, he demonstrated an ability to work across political lines that has eluded Mr. Obama, who doesn't even command the respect of his own party elders.
And while his opponents may try to paint Mr. Romney as a cold-hearted businessman, his actions speak otherwise. Mr. Romney donates 30 percent of his income to his church and to charity, a sum that eclipses the donations of most sitting politicians, including our president.
This election is about ensuring the health of America's economy and our children's future.
We can trust Mitt Romney to get it right. Barack Obama has already proven he can't.
