Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson Preview Debt Reduction Campaign on CNBC Today Bowles and Simpson Join Warren Buffett for In-Depth Discussion on Debt and the Fiscal Cliff
Highlighting the Fix the Debt Campaign to be Launched July 17
PoliticalNews.me - Jul 12,2012 - WASHINGTON, DC – Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, former co-chairs of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, today appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box with Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett to discuss the need for leaders in Washington to take action on the looming fiscal cliff and the mounting national debt. They also previewed a new campaign that will generate public support for a comprehensive solution.
Bowles and Simpson highlighted the Campaign to Fix the Debt (www.FixTheDebtCampaign.org), an initiative they have co-founded to galvanize national support for a bipartisan debt reduction plan that Congress can pass and the President will sign by July 4, 2013.
In the interview, Bowles said going off the so-called fiscal cliff could be a “disaster for the country.” He urged instead that lawmakers use the opportunity to put in place meaningful, bipartisan reforms that put the country’s fiscal house in order and avoid saddling future generations with an unsustainable debt burden.
Simpson added, “When the tipping point comes and the guys who gave us money want more money for their … interest, guess who will be hurt the worst? The little guy that everybody talks about day and night."
The Campaign to Fix the Debt will be formally launched on July 17 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The event will include remarks from Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget; Campaign to Fix the Debt co-chairs Senator Judd Gregg and Governor Ed Rendell; co-founder Erskine Bowles; Alice Rivlin (former CBO and OMB director); David Cote (Honeywell); Larry Fink (BlackRock); Pete Peterson (Peterson Foundation); Steve Rattner (Willett Advisors); Paul Stebbins (World Fuel Services) and Ambassador Bob Zoellick.
