NEWARK—A day after visiting Rutgers-Camden to join with students, faculty and members of the local community, U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) issued a statement in support of the Rutgers Board of Trustees’ rejection of the proposed merger:
"A good decision was made by the Rutgers Board of Trustees. Their vote assures the continuation of an important presence in Camden. Their overwhelming support for Rutgers-Camden shows the important access that the school provides to students in South Jersey and the hope and encouragement it provides to the Camden community. The Board of Trustees has a voice that must be heard by Governor Chris Christie, Senate President Stephen Sweeney, George Norcross and all others who are involved. They must respect the majority of residents in the region and drop their plans to wipe away Rutgers-Camden and the contributions it has made to South Jersey and the entire state."
