(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Sen. David Vitter made the following statement regarding news that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others have been charged with planning and executing the September 11, 2001 attacks.
“Nothing we can do will take back the pain caused on September 11, 2001, but we need to continue doing everything we can to make sure we keep terrorists out of our homeland,” Vitter said. “Terrorists like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed have no business getting access to the same rights as U.S. citizens in our court system, and getting this done through a military tribunal is absolutely the right thing to do.”
This Congress, Vitter cosponsored legislation that would prohibit funding for the prosecution of 9/11 conspirators in civilian courts. Last Congress, Vitter introduced legislation that prevented suspected terrorists and enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay from being tried in U.S criminal courts instead of military tribunals. He also joined 18 of his colleagues in sending a letter to President Obama in 2010 expressing concern about his administration’s decision to prosecute Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the man who attempted to detonate a bomb aboard an American airliner on Christmas Day 2009, in a U.S. criminal court.
