INDIANAPOLIS - Sen. Dick Lugar plans to maintain public pressure so federal bureaucrats do not violate religious freedoms of charities, schools and hospitals.
Lugar is co-sponsoring the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act that would reverse an Obama Administration ruling that forces virtually all private health plans - including those provided by religious-affiliated groups - to cover contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs.
Friends of Dick Lugar, the official campaign committee for Lugar's re-election, recently purchased radio advertisements to heighten awareness of Hoosiers about the issue. (Click here to listen.)
President Obama has retreated somewhat from the controversial healthcare ruling and announced a so-called compromise after protests from faith leaders, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Leaders like Lugar were unmoved by Obama's explanation and said "there is no room for compromise" when it comes to freedom of religion.
"I am co-sponsoring a bill that stops President Obama from another outrageous government health care regulation -- one that intrudes on American principles of religious freedom. President Obama has no right to legally require people of faith to act against their moral beliefs," Lugar said in the radio spot.
Lugar's ad, entitled "Obama Has No Right," ran in key media markets across Indiana. Here is a complete transcript of the 60-second message on religious freedom:
